The musical compositions of Richard Burdick

Opus 141b:

Nice Notes, opus 141b AND Nicer Notes, opus 141b2

For an unspecified number of musicians sitting as far apart as possible, but within hearing distance of each other.

1) Play a long note either pp, p, or mf. While sustaining the tone, think & decide to what note you want to move. Be thoughtful! After playing the long tone go to the tone you have decided upon. Play the second tone either softer, louder or the same dynamic as the first tone and shorter or longer. Try not to be influenced by the other musicians.

2) Next, take several deep breaths; calmly in and out. Then repeat step one.

3) The piece is over when you have played a nice variety of nice notes in a variety of dynamics.

4) Sit quietly and breath well . . . .take a break.

The philosophy and more background on how I think this work should be played

When I performed this work for my Nice Notes CD, I didn't allow a lot of time, I wanted short tracks in between the "full-composed" works. The work really needs time; an indefinite amount of time. I didn't take this seriously enough, the choice of long note and the other tone needs to be a process from the mind either thoughtful or non-thoughtful, but from the depths of felling or sensing; like what color tone you want to resonate.

When a tone choice has emerged from your being, then as you play the long note decide the next tone. I was okay with this part. I could think "do I want to play this note? or this? or this? And as I did this I had a sense of color of the tones. I am sure its different for everybody, but this piece helps us creat art as we do self exploration.

The original work "Nice Notes" had an option for loud tones. I have removed that option and changed the name to "Nicer Notes"
